Hey guys, welcome to RobotObzor! Today I thought we could take a look at the new cordless vacuum cleaner from Dyson, namely Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute. It came out last year, but even in 2024 it is still one of the best, in my opinion, vertical vacuums. With a kit stacked with 6 extra nozzles I spent around $750. But I’m getting ahead of myself, I don’t want to give it all away yet. Now, I’ll test and review the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute, after which I’ll tell you the pros and cons and what I think about the vacuum. Don’t forget to like and subscribe, and let’s get rolling!

Kit
The standard kit includes:
- The main block.
- An extension tube with a chamber attachment tip.
- The main attachment with a brush roller for the carpet..
- The main fluffy attachment for hard surfaces.
- At attachment for cleaning soft furniture.
- At attachment with a moving brush.
- A charger.
- A wall holder for the accessories and vacuum.
- A documentation.
There also exists an upgraded kit with extra nozzles and attachments. I decided not to spend the extra thousand or so, but keep in mind that there is a version with 10 attachments instead of 6.
Design
Now, let’s check out how this thing works. But first of all let’s not overlook this stylish design with the blended colors. I’ll be honest, this is the first Dyson I’ve ever held despite having tested more than 50 upright vacuums. And, to say the least, its amazing. The assembly and build is beautiful, but personally the color drips take away from it visually.
Let’s start with the main block. Inside is the washing motor, getting up to 280 AWt. To compare, Dyson V15 only has 240 AWt.
The battery can be taken off, which is a plus. It has a connector to plug in the charger. You can either do this by hand or just place the plug into the wall holder, which works like wireless charging – super convenient!
There’s also a display and control buttons at the end for easy use.
You turn the vacuum on and off with a single press – no need to hold the button. A second button lets you switch between four modes: Eco, Medium, Auto, and Turbo. When you attach the floor nozzles, Auto mode replaces Medium, boosting power when it detects dirt or carpets. For spot cleaning attachments, it stays on medium, which is pretty handy. It shows you the battery percentage for each mode right on the display.
It’s also very convenient that it’s in several languages. The setting have more options. Oh, and you’ve probably noticed the statistics on the display. The vacuum detects and counts the amount and size of the dirt.
Around the display is the filtration system based off cloth and Hepa-filters. Both are ok to wash with water, for which there is a sticker. And here’s how Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute’s first cool feature looks – dirt container emptying technology. At the bottom is a special slider, through which the bulb can move up and down, cleaning dirt along the way.
If needed, you can completely remove the bulb of the container to wash. But the netted cyclone, unfortunately, isn’t removable. Pretty inconvenient in my opinion. I’mt used to rinsing after use, which is the case in most analogs. Let’s now review the attachments. The coolest is the main one, with a roller for hard surfaces and equipped with a swivel joint. The roller goes right up to the front edge, and there’s a cool built-in light on the side to help you see what you’re cleaning.
Dyson started this trend, and now other brands have picked it up too. The light is honestly awesome – it makes vacuuming in the dark weirdly satisfying. If you’ve tried it, you know what I mean!
The roller is easy to remove from the side without any tools, and if you need to clean off hair or fur, the side lock pops off too. Super convenient!
The carpet roller attachment also has a swivel joint. At the front is a switch for the lower curtain, which I recommend to be opened when picking up large dirt. A flathead screwdriver is needed to remove the roller. On the shaft are long brush inserts, which have proven to be effective in combing out carpets. Behind the roller we see a comb for untangling coiled hair and fur. Another smart decision.
The attachment for cleaning upholstered furniture and mattresses also deserves special attention. Turbo brush cone-shaped. Probably for dumping coiled hair and fur. Plastic with a bristle insert.

Overall, the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute has both pros and cons in terms of design, which I’ll go over again at the end of the video. But so far so good.
Specifications
Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute’s main specs, as stated by the manufacturer, are up on the screen:
- Battery: 2500 mA*h.
- Suction power: up to 282 aWt.
- Work time up to 70 mins.
- Dirt container 760 ml ( 25.7 Oz.).
- Volume: 70.5-81 dB.
- Weight: 3,065-3,447 kg (6,10-7,8 lbs.).
The volume I checked personally, and it’s within 70,5-81 dB, which is a little noisy. It does have the highest power, because that does make a difference. As for the weight, the main unit weighs 2247 grams (4.9 lbs.), the extension tube weighs 393 grams (.86 lbs.), the attachment for the floor with a fluffy roller 425 grams (.93 lbs.), and the attachment with a roller for carpets 807 grams (1.7 lbs.). In total, when fully assembled, the vacuum weighs between 3,065 grams and 3,447 grams (6.75-7.6 lbs.). A bit heavier than other vacuums, which is important to consider.
Testing
Video review:
Work time
Finally, let’s get to testing. First of all, let’s check the battery life in Turbo mode with the main attachment installed. So here it managed to work for 14 minutes and 32 seconds, pretty good. The standard run time is about 10-12 minutes for upright vacuum cleaners at max power. And it is interesting that when turned on, the remaining working time of 16 minutes and 24 seconds was displayed. As I said before, it’s not exact.
Suction power
In terms of suction power, even in Eco mode, the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute sucked dirt out of a 10mm (.39 In.) crack without any problems. So this is definitely a very powerful vacuum.
Collecting dirt on the laminate
Now let’s check how well Dyson’s flagship picks up dirt from the floor. I scattered different dirt on the laminate: hair, fur, cereal, and other small trash. So it did well picking up the dirt. I’ll note that it has no problems with collecting dirt along the baseboard and in the corners. It collects everything thoroughly. The fluffy roller doesn’t wind up hair and fur. That’s a plus!
With everyday use, after collecting hair from the floor, and you see that there is a lot, the roller is also completely clean. Crazy!
Carpet cleaning
I scattered the same dirt on a low carpet, and the Dyson pulled the living soul out of it. Then also thoroughly cleaned the medium carpet. Again, the carpet roller is clean and nothing got wrapped up on it.
In the telegram channel chat I was asked if the turbo brush in the medium pile gets blocked in Turbo mode. No, it’s not blocked, but at max power it’s really hard to drive it forward on the pile, the suction is very strong.
Using the different attachments
It’s also worth noting that thanks to the full set you can clean the sofa, clean where the main nozzle won’t go and even clean the interior of the car if necessary. That’s a plus!
Cleaning the dirt bag
Well and to close off I’ll show how the container is cleaned. In usual household conditions the half-empty container, including the fur, is very quickly and conveniently cleaned. But even if the container is completely full, fur and hair are scraped off the mesh filter around the cyclone and all the garbage falls out into the bucket. Usually with other vacuums I had to completely remove the bulb and shake it out. Here Dyson is the best and even better than most other brands.
Personal opinion
Now that we’ve concluded the tests, I’ll highlight the pros and cons, and let you know what I think. I liked the following:
- The suction power is seriously strong. I’m not just going by the 280 AW rating, but by how well the Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute cleans carpets and pulls dirt from sofa upholstery. In Turbo mode, it can even match corded vacuums, though it only runs for about 14.5 minutes.
- Even 14.5 minutes is great battery life for such a powerful vacuum – better than most similar models by a couple of minutes. In Eco mode, which is usually plenty, it can last up to 70 minutes!
- The Dyson Gen5 Detect Absolute does a great job picking up debris on different surfaces, thanks to its two floor nozzles.
- A huge bonus is Dyson’s dust bag emptying system – by far the most convenient I’ve used. And I’ve tested over 50 vacuums!
- The signature Dyson laser lighting is another big win. It highlights debris from a distance, making cleaning more thorough and satisfying.
- There’s also a crevice nozzle hidden inside the extension tube that pops out with one motion – a feature I really liked.
- The filtration system is top-notch, with a 14-cyclone system, HEPA filter, fabric filter, and mesh. You can even wash the HEPA filter with water.
- The vacuum automatically boosts suction when it detects dirt or carpets – a super useful feature that helps save battery life.
- There’s a trash counting mode. While not a must-have, it’s a fun and smart feature for a premium vacuum.
- The bright display, with a menu in several languages, is easy to read and deserves a shout-out.
- The removable battery is a great touch, making it easy to swap out for longer cleaning sessions if you buy an extra one.
- You can charge the vacuum by just putting it in the wall holder – no need to plug it in each time. It’s kinda like wireless charging.
- It’s got a solid build and Dyson’s reputation for quality. People even call Dyson the “king of the air,” and I can see why.
- And of course, the design is stylish with a cool color combo. It definitely stands out from other vacuums, which is a nice bonus.
As for what could be improved, here’s what I think.
- The cyclone filter with a grid isn’t removable, and personally it’s annoying. There’s no way to wash these units. You can only somehow knock out the dust that has settled inside, and this is inconvenient.
- There’s no holders for all the attachments in the set. It’s not very convenient to store them, and not all can be fixed on the wall holder.
- Its heavier than others. Your hand gets tired faster, especially if you use the vacuum cleaner as a handheld.
- Have not realized one-handed operation. No matter how much you want to, you can’t reach the power button with your thumb with the hand that you hold the vacuum cleaner with. You have to use your other hand. Not critical, but many brands strive for one-handed operation, and I support this decision.
- Increased noise level during operation. All because of the power, but this fact many people take into account when choosing an upright vacuum cleaner. It would be good to work on the noise reduction of the motor compartment.
- No vertical parking outside the holder. That is, if in the process of operation you need to distract yourself, you will have to bend down and put the vacuum cleaner on the floor or lean on something.
- One last thing I didn’t like was the branded paint smudges on the body. They look cheap, although brand representatives earlier praised these as a result of the use of high-quality materials they use. It’d be better to find other ways to make the body stronger without leaving streaks, if you ask me.

Overall I had a lot of fun using this very ergonomic and stylish vertical vacuum cleaner. And this is definitely one of the best wireless vertical vacuums in 2024, from what I’ve tested. Out of my experience, the only vacuum that can come close to competing, even just by price is the Dreame Z30. And it even has 310 Aerowatts! What do you guys think? Should I make a video comparing them? Let me know in the comments down below, and don’t forget to like and subscribe to never miss out on new reviews. On this note, I’d like to end the review.
