Hey guys, welcome to Robotobzor! Today we’ll review the new Dreame X40 Ultra Complete robot vacuum cleaner. This is the flagship model for the global market, despite it being the X-series. The price at the start of sales is around $1400, which is at the level of premium vacuums. For this money, the robot actually has the most advanced functionality and design by 2024’s standards. There’s a retractable side brush for sweeping out garbage in corners, and a retractable wipe, increased suction power up to 12000 Pa, and a compact station with scrapers for automatic self-cleaning at the bottom, and updated AI. All in all, the changes have only improved upon the previous flagship L30 Ultra and now it’s important to test them out. Now, I’ll test DreameX40 Ultra Complete in detail, highlight the pros and cons based on the results of the tests, and let you know if this is the next robot for you! Let’s get rolling!

Kit
The robot came in this branded box:
The package is full, which I guess now we know why its called complete. That is, the box includes the robot itself with a station, power adapter, two holders with wipes, instruction manual, brush and a spare bag. And there is an additional kit that includes: a liter (.26 G.) bottle of detergent, 12 wipes, two side brushes, silicone turbo brush, 3 HEPA-filters and 3 bags for the station.
Now, that’s what I call a $1000 kit! We should be getting this with every kit at this price!
Appearance
Now let’s take a look at the robot itself! The Dreame X40 Ultra Complete is round and available in white and gold. The robot vacuum stands 97 mm tall (3.8In.).
It features a wall sensor on the right side, and a set of sensors and cameras in the center to help it avoid obstacles.
You can even monitor your home remotely through its camera, and a backlight for better navigation in the dark.
The robot uses lidar for navigation, with a spring-loaded cover and three buttons nearby.
The dust container, holding 300 ml (10 Oz.), is under the top cover and uses a HEPA filter. It also has a hidden 80 ml water tank that fills automatically through the station.
At the bottom, there are four anti-fall sensors and a carpet sensor.
The upgraded three-beam side brush is great for sweeping dirt from corners and narrow gaps.
The central brush on the Dreame X40 Ultra is a floating unit with a regular silicone brush, which is a bit disappointing. The Chinese version, Dreame X40 Pro, comes with a bladed brush, but this one doesn’t have it yet. The silicone brush can be taken apart on both sides to remove hair and dirt.
Behind the turbo brush, there’s two wipe holders, normal for Dreame vacuums. The left wipe has a MopExtend mechanism that helps clean close to baseboards and furniture.
The robot even adjusts itself if it senses a small gap, like under a door or furniture, for better cleaning. The wipes not only press against baseboards but also get into corners for thorough cleaning. They automatically lift when on carpets, during dry cleaning, or when returning to the station, with an increased height of 10.5 mm (0.4 In.), just like the brushes.
I’ll note here that with Dreame X40 Ultra Complete, you can, depending on the mode, automatically lift wipes, turbo brush and side brush. This is all very cool, but shortly I’ll tell you about some nuances that come up.
As for the station, the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete self-cleans, washes wipes with hot water and dries them with warm air.
There is also an automatic detergent mixer and, if necessary, the station can be connected to the utilities by purchasing the appropriate module.
The main update of the station – there are now built in scrapers in the wipe washing area, which self-clean the station.
Otherwise, everything is very practical as it was. Large tanks in the station and in general a pleasant design.

Features
As for the features, the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete is controlled through the Dreamehome app. It connects to the internet without any problems. There’s no regional blockages or workarounds. The app is in several languages, the robot also speaks in several languages, which is super convenient!
The main functions of the robot are up on the screen:
- Self-cleaning dirt bag.
- Washing the cloths with hot water (70°C/158°F).
- Cloths dried with warm air.
- Automatic detergent adding.
- Lift for the, side and center brush.
- Side brushes go in corners.
- Object detection on the floor.
- Camera illumination in darker conditions.
- Remote home tracking via smartphone.
- Multiple maps saved in memory.
- 3D map of the room.
- Automatically zones the area into rooms.
- Selection of zones and rooms for cleaning.
- Virtual walls and no-go/no-mop zones.

- Ultimate mode.
- Stain recognition.
- Cleaning log.
- Schedule cleaning setup.
- Automatic power boost on carpets.
- Carpet bypass while mopping.
- Automatic removal of wipe holders at the station.
- Support voice assistants.
There are now more ways to customize the cleaning settings. One key improvement is that the water temperature for washing wipes has been increased, which should make the station more effective.
The side brush has also been upgraded to lift when the robot returns to the station, cleans the floor, or moves over carpets. The carpet cleaning feature is a bit tricky, and there’s more to discuss on that.
Plus, a new feature has been added that allows the robot to detect and thoroughly scrub stains on the floor.I’ll note that at the time of the review, the app doesn’t support the brand’s “Ok, Dreame” voice assistant. But the brand representatives assure us that this is temporary. I also didn’t find the curtain cleaning function, which I showed on the Chinese X40 Pro.
Among the interesting things, here, I’ll show you how to remotely track your home, to look after pets or burglars!
Testing
Video review:
Navigation
Finally, let’s get to testing! Let’s start by testing how well Dreame X40 Ultra Complete navigates a room with obstacles. The robot vacuum first goes around the edges of the room, then cleans the area in a zigzag pattern. It noticed the dryer legs and carefully moved around them, sweeping around the box and chair legs separately before returning to the station. This test was passed with flying colors!
As for the rest of the house, the robot handles one room at a time, following the same perimeter then zigzag pattern. After finishing a room, it goes back to the station to clean its wipes, then continues from where it left off. It doesn’t miss any spots, so the navigation is solid!
Object detection
Now for the object detection system. In good lighting it ‘s very accurate. The robot successfully recognized all 6 out of 6 objects, displaying them with corresponding icons on the map. That’s a great result! The toy was recognized as a pet because of its shape.
The robot vacuum cleaner also did well in total darkness, recognizing and avoiding 6 out of 6 objects.
Test passed successfully!
Suction power
In terms of suction power, in Quiet mode the robot is able to suck out dirt from a 2 mm (.07 In.) slot and partially from a 4 mm (.15 In.) slot. In Standard mode, the robot gets dirt out more confidently from the 4 mm (.15 In.) slot. In Turbo and Max modes, the power is about the same and the robot is already able to clean dirt from 6 (.23 In.)and also 10 mm (.39 In.)slots. Maximum+ is the most powerful mode, in which the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete cleans dirt more thoroughly from all cracks, including 8 mm (.31 In.). Overall, in any case, the power is very high in this robot, and it copes with sucking out dirt from a 10 mm (.39 In.) crack.
Dry cleaning
The robot picks up dirt off the laminate pretty well. The robot vacuum cleaned the area FULLY, including the corners. The center and side brushes are clean, all the trash is in the dust bag. The test was successful!
Carpet cleaning
There’s a significant issue with how this robot handles carpets. When the vacuum detects a carpet, it not only lifts the cleaning wipes but also the side brush—a big flaw by the engineers. So, though the vacuum picks up most of the dirt, it leaves behind a small amount around the edges where neither the side brush nor the central brush can reach.
And unfortunately there’s no help in the settings either. You can only disable the wipes lift entirely, which means the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete will continue to make contact with the carpet with the wipes, and the side brush will remain active. Overall, it does a decent job on medium-pile carpets, but I had to use a mode that keeps both the wipes and the side brush engaged when cleaning.
Self-cleaning
Immediately after the “dirty tests” I wanted to see how well the vacuum cleans itself. Before returning to the station, the container was full of trash. But after self-cleaning, the container is spotless. An excellent result.
Mopping
It mops really well. The cloth presses well against the floor and absorbs the dirt.
In terms of scrubbing difficult dirt, the robot scrubbed even dried coffee and sauce stains. Not on the first try, the eighth to be exact, but nevertheless. Many competitors can’t even get close.
Mopping and carpets
As for mopping with carpets, the robot does a few things. I will single out the 3 most interesting ones. The first one is automatic wipe lifting when driving on carpets, which allows the robot to vacuum and mop the floor at the same time, leaving the carpets dry and clean.
The second option is to activate the automatic carpet detection while mopping. And the third mode is interesting. The vacuum first cleans and mops the hard floor, then drives unto the base , automatically unhooks the wipes and returns to cleaning, vacuuming carpets without wipes. This is useful with taller carpets, to completely eliminate wipe contact with the carpeting if necessary.
The idea is very cool, and not just because the wipes don’t touch the carpets completely, but its also more reliable than just lifting the cloths in case the lifting mechanism fails.
Cloth cleaning quality
Let’s jump right into testing how well the station works. First up, let’s talk about how it cleans the cloths. After mopping up dirt and stains from the floor, the wipes don’t look good. To fix this, we run them through the station, and they’re much cleaner. Increasing the heat to 70 degrees and automatically swirling the detergent really made a difference.
In an everyday scenario, after mopping the floor, the station does a great job of getting the cloths even cleaner with warm water pressure. That’s definitely a plus.
As for station maintenance, it’s super easy. Just take out the trap, rinse the tray in the sink, and wipe down the bottom with a damp cloth if needed. The scrapers inside do a solid job of keeping the bottom clean.
Obstacles
When it comes to obstacles, they’re no match for our machine. It easily cleared a 20 mm threshold (1.18 In.).
Dark spaces
And if you’ve got black carpets, no worries — the robot glides over them like they’re not even there.
Volume
Well, as for the volume, it stays between 54-72.5 dB depending on the selected mode. The volume is average, which is normal given the high power.
I also noticed that the station self-cleans very quietly. I decided to check this, and I was right. DreameX40 Ultra Complete has a volume of about 67 dB when self-cleaning, while competitors like the Dremae D10 Plus Gen 2 has a volume of about 75 dB.
Opinion
Dreame X40 Ultra Complete robot vacuum cleaner was thoroughly reviewed and tested. Our evaluation system scored it 234 points and expectedly topped the overall ranking of our tested robot vacuum cleaners as of December 2024. And that’s even taking into account all the problems and remarks I found, which I’ll tell you about in a moment. In the video description I left links to the scoring algorithm and the overall ranking of previously tested robot vacuum cleaners. Now, here’s what i liked:
- A maxed out station by 2024’s standards, which lets you self-clean, wash cloths with VERY hot water, dry them with warm air, and automatically mix detergent. The station does all of these tasks thoroughly. It’s also possible to attach to your utilities with a separate kit.
- A retractable side brush, which finally completely solves the issue of sweeping out the corners. And unlike D-shaped robots, the round Dreame Bot X40 Ultra doesn’t lose its maneuverability. It quickly and accurately passes in corners and around chair legs, with no unnecessary movements.
- Amazing mopping. Here we are talking about a retractable wipe, thanks to which the robot thoroughly cleans the areas along the baseboard and furniture. And thanks to updated algorithms, the wipe better washes the corners and narrow gaps under the furniture. To scrub dirt, by the way, the robot has become better than the previously released models in the line. Perhaps it’s also because the wipes are hotter after washing.
- Very high suction power, both as stated and in real tests.
- Quality vacuuming and mopping on any surface.
- You can buy a separate bladed turbobrush which self-cleans itself by cutting through hair.
- A large kit with all you ever need.
- An object detection system. The robot actually cleans more neatly and is less likely to chew up a wire, sock or some other household item.
- Automatic removal of wipe holders at the station for a full vacuum.
- Automatic wipe lift, turbo brush and side brush.
- Lots of functions in the app. You can very flexibly customize the cleaning settings to suit your own needs. There is also CleanGenius smart cleaning mode, new options for passing thresholds. And it’s believed that we’re soon to see a behind the curtain cleaning function
- Remote home tracking when connected to the robot’s camera via smartphone.
- Easy maintenance of the robot and station.
- Good off-road.
- The robot isn’t afraid of black coatings.
- Low volume of the station when self-cleaning.
- Quality assembly and high brand credibility.
- Availability of full warranty and service.
Now what I didn’t like:
- The side brush rises on carpets and as a consequence – if the carpet is close to the baseboard or furniture, these areas of the carpet will not be cleaned. The problem is solved by setting the mode to ignore carpets, but then the damp wipes will be lowered simultaneously with the side brush, which isn’t good. Overall, we definitely need a setting to manually disable the side brush lifting on carpets.
- It doesn’t come standard with the coolest turbo brush with blades. You have to buy it separately and I really didn’t like that.
- At the time of the review, the app does not have Ok Dreame’s proprietary voice assistant.
- The robot doesn’t clean behind curtains and drapes. Maybe, of course, in the future they will add this feature, like the X40 Pro. But even there the zones with curtains do not work very correctly, the robot does not ram them up to the wall, but only slightly moves them.
Overall, Dreame X40 Ultra Complete is a significant leap toward the perfect robot vacuum. It’s almost there, but a few minor software tweaks are needed to fix the problems mentioned earlier. The latest update has noticeably improved its performance, like how it maneuvers in tight spaces and extends the side brush, plus the self-cleaning scrapers on the station’s bottom.
However, if these new features aren’t a must-have for you, there are other great models in the lineup, like the DreameBot L10s Pro Ultra Heat, which is $400-500 cheaper. With so many good options available, the decision comes down to whether you want the absolute best or the most cost-effective choice. And for 2024, the Dreame X40 Ultra Complete is undeniably the best in Dreame’s lineup – the tests prove it.
